The Goreme Open Air Museum. These are just some of the hundreds of ancient churches that are scattered throughout Cappadocia. In the 7th century, thousands of Christians were forced to flee either to underground cities or rocky caves for refuge. These chapels and churches became intimate and cardinal places of worship for those hiding in the caves and were kept secret for two hundred years.
